John graduated from London University in 1974 and, after a short career in the airline business, began working in Town Planning in 1975. He completed his Postgraduate Diploma in Town Planning from South Bank Polytechnic in 1978 and become a Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute in 1979.
John has a total of 40 years experience in planning, the first 12 years of which were in Local Government. He worked in both development control and planning policy and moved into private practice from a senior position in a London Borough in 1987.
Between 1987 and 1996 John was an Associate Director responsible for planning consultancy matters at a national firm of chartered surveyors. He established his own practice, AJP Planning, in 1997 and in 2000 joined with Fred Robinson to form Robinson Escott Planning.
John has wide ranging experience in all aspects of planning. He has handled cases relating to:
- Residential proposals both large and small scale.
- Commercial – office and small business unit schemes.
- Leisure uses including sporting facilities.
- Green Belt cases.
- Educational proposals.
- Enforcement matters.
John has long experience in instructing Counsel, appearing as an Advocate at Local Inquiries as well as appearing as an expert witness. He undertook his first Public Inquiry in 1979.
He has represented many large house building and corporate clients over the years as well as a wide range of other bodies and individuals. He has acted for a number of Local Planning Authorities as well as other public bodies such as NHS Trusts.
